So far, the INNO-GRIPS team has managed to compile some 270 important items from the literature on innovation in our database. Please have a look at these and tell us what you think about the usefulness of the material and the overall approach. Also, in addition to the knowledge-base at the main GRIPS website, we are attempting to list the key literatures associated with each of our ministudies (Please check these by following the blogroll link on the right). We want this to remain a living site, recognising that the research field has not just come to an end when we completed our reviews!

Thus, we need to know and to collate more on these areas, and especially on emerging “hot topics”in innovation in your area – in other words, what do you consider to be the most interesting and productive recent and/or most debated subjects. We are also keen on new ‘grey literature’ you might have come across, or other missing sources that you think we (or this project) need to know.

The meeting was attended by 15 participants comprising invited experts from universities and research institutions, members of major international development organizations, INNOGRIPS project team members and representatives from the European Commission Directorate General Enterprise and Industry.

Innovation policy necessarily involves policy in the more industrially advanced regions of the world, where the problems are typically least severe, but also in poorer developing regions – some of which may have relatively good performance, whilst others are in desperate straits. Innovation policy will need to encompass a wide range of traditionally discrete policy areas – parts of agricultural and innovation policies, education policies, environmental policies, health and welfare policies, intellectual property policies, research and science policies, and the like. It is important to understand how polices in the EU – including trade and aid policies – relate to the innovation policy agendas in developing regions themselves.

This innovation policy workshop was designed to address these issues, in the context of innovation-oriented action in the EU and other industrially advanced regions. It took into account the various paths that the co-evolution of innovation policies and measures to address the three major problems are taking in different world regions.

In order to do so, each of the team member needs to register to www.wordpress.com. Once registered, you can have blog of your own as well — but the most important thing for this project is that: let me know the email address you use to register to wordpress. Only by doing so I can invite you as the administrator of this blog and other relevant blogs for this project. Then you can start posting, editing, etc.

So, please make use of these blogs and share whatever you have in mind, e.g. interesting/relevant literature, grey literature, contacts, etc.

“For each MS, the following questions should be addressed:

• Is the subject discussed in the academic debates?
• Can it be considered as a trend? Which mega-trends underlie the subject?
• Is the subject linked to other issues or concepts?
• What is the language referring to the subject? Which semantics to be used?”

These are fine and interesting to do, but AQ has (rightly) pointed out that the links to innovation policy and generally to innovation and competitiveness should be to the fore. If we use a Q&A foprmat the above will be say 4 questions out of 28 or so… and some can be interpreted in a relevant direction in any case.

Possible studies:
A “list of MS” subjects will be sent to LL&A, including a short description of each subject and the name of the referent(s) within the Innovation Unit. The EC has established themes for the first four MS (year one):

1. Gazelles
Referent: Mariana Perogiani
This MS shall provide background analysis to the INNO-VIEWS workshop of April 2006. The following questions will have to be explored:

• What motivates enterprises to look for growth?
• What are the main concepts linking entrepreneurship to innovation?
• Who are the gazelles: young entrepreneurs or senior executives?
• What is the point of view of the press, the academic circles, etc.?
• What is driving gazelles?
• Do they need political support? What sort of support?

2. Society-driven innovation
Referent: Christophe Guichard
Main issues:

• Which mega-trends are underlying this concept?
• What are the transmission mechanisms between society needs and innovation?
• What sort of public intervention is required?

3. Innovation Skills
This MS will aim at identifying:

• Skills required for innovation, creativity, design?
• Sociological issues inherent to this subject such as the role of women, etc.
• The importance of dialogue in open innovation,
• How can policy makers impact motivation skills and creativity?

4. Open subject (i.e. of our choice)
